The dress is among a collection of 43 bridal garments in The White Wedding Dress: 200 Years of Wedding Fashions, an exhibition curated by the V&A that will have its world premiere at the Bendigo Art Gallery in Victoria next month, before an international tour.
Ehrman chose the gowns and accessories from a collection of more than 200 at the museum, dating from the early 19th century to the present, with designs from names such as Charles Frederick Worth, John Galliano, Vivienne Westwood, Vera Wang, Christian Lacroix, Lanvin, Philip Treacy and Stephen Jones.
''One thing that all museums like to do is highlight their best collections,'' she says. ''There had been no exhibitions focusing on wedding dresses since the 1980s and we thought it was time to take a fresh look at them.''
Bendigo is not often counted among the global fashion capitals but the gallery has a proven track record in drawing crowds to fashion exhibits. In 2009, it hosted The Golden Age of Couture, a V&A project looking at fashion from 1947 to 1957.
